Description
Moonlit Ripples, 12 x 12 inches, acrylic with mica and retroreflective sphere on panel.
We have been taking the ferry across the Long Island Sound fairly frequently. Several crossings have been at dusk or at night. I have been looking for ways to capture some of the subtleties of light in a dark and rippling waves lit by moonlight or dusk skylight. Part of the challenge is using media to capture the light while at the same time depicting a scene.
Here small black mica flakes layered over a softly sparkling deep gray oxide were used to create the water ripples. The mica has a subtle reflectivity, and the raked ripple pattern catches the light at different angles. The moon trail was created using graded sizes of silver mica flakes and clear mica flakes with some deeper colors mixed in.
Much of the sky was painted, first with deep blues over a dark black india ink base. The dark base was followed by layers of swirling translucent white and indigo mixed with gel medium for body and transparency, and to soften the colors.
The moon was created by creating an indentation in the wet gel used to paint the clouds. the bottom of this indentation was carefully lined with silver foil to reflect the light. A single spherical piece of glass was then pressed into a layer of clear gel on top of the foil. The subtle crinkling reflective property of the foil is lensed by the glass, creating light effects. In sunlight the effect is a strong sparkle that casts subtle beams of light into the three dimensional translucent painted clouds. Under most lighting the effect is a soft moonglow coming from the glass sphere, or a contrast between the glass and painted cloud.
