Description
Complex Fluid is an imaginary fluid nanostructure, with little hints and allusions to surfactancy, cell membranes, and complex fluids in general. Many complex fluids contain amphiphilic molecules. Amphiphilic molecules are large enough to have two distinct chemical zones, with one zone favoring water and the other zone repelling water and favoring more oily and fatty environments. These amphiphilic molecules spontaneously organize themselves into complex soft and dynamic structures in order to keep both of their chemical zones “happy”. Soap can capture oily dirt because amphiphilic molecules for tiny capsules and surround the dirt with their oily water-hating zones, while their water loving zones stick out into the water. Amphiphilic molecules are indicated using fine line hashing for the hydrophobic fatty water hating zone and and tiny open circles for the water loving part of the molecules. They are arranged in complex semi-ordered patterns typical of complex fluids called “lyotropic liquid crystals”, where the term “lyotropic” reflects the changes in patterns of organization as the concentration of the amphiphilic molecules is changed. What do microstructures and nanostructures really do when we’re not looking?
