A visual pun on a mathematical idea. The yellow impasto lines are spanning the gray space, in the sense of creating a bridge across the painting. There is also a hidden process at work, reorganizing gray into blocks of contrasting color. The gray background is being given values and locations visually, just as a set of vectors that span a space provide a way to measure and organize.
