Notes: Throughout the history of Natural Philosophy and Science, people have come up with theories to explain the tiniest structures of matter and the large sweep of cosmological order. As more observations are made these theories become more baroque until a truly new insight replaces them as the central simple theory. The idea that simple theories are better is deeply rooted in human thought and perception. The basic ideas that we use to create theories are also thoroughly human constructs, made to fit the external world. How does the human information filter act on the world? To me this has always been a central question, niggling at the back of my mind while i practiced my science.
In the case of Quantum scale phenomena the presence of an observer changes the reality from an uncertain superposition to a distinct observation. The niggling questions about information, perception, and the human observational filter are brought smack into the center of the inquiry.
"Bolstered by our Ersatz Cosmologies" explores some of these ideas using tiny line elements and stippling to create spaces and forms reminiscent of both microscale and astronomical scale phenomena. At arms length the individual marks melt into the larger forms, becoming indistinct. Viewed close-up, tiny distinct geometries are observed collectively creating the larger forms. The role of the observer is represented using a Surrealist trope - the disembodied gaze or human eye. In "Bolstered by our Ersatz Cosmologies" depictions of human gazes also meld smoothly in and out of the physical phenomena; observer and observed.
