Artist's Description
On a chip recognizes the advances of the Early 21st Century, when there was a huge multidisciplinary push to get things onto silicon chips. The idea was to expand the functionality of chips beyond printed circuits. People developed fluid testers and sorters and the field of microfluidics blossomed. Biosensors and chemosensors were configured onto chips along with electromechanical devices and a range of other functionalities. Lab on a chip became what can we get onto a chip? The chip format provided compatibility with microelectronics. When we look around at all of the new and amazing hand held sensors, testers, assayers, and detectors we are seeing the results of the On a Chip push.
