Description
A depiction of the beach on a bright sunny day. Most of the painting was laid in using traditional acrylic painting techniques. The water and horizon line use the transparency of acrylic gel media. A deep clear blue layer of tinted gel medium was raked to create rippling wave patterns. Swirling white and blue liquid acrylic paint in liquid medium techniques created the soft swirled and blended colors of seafoam near the shore. Tiny retroreflective glass spheres create the bubbly texture of breaking waves. These glass pieces also act as lenses, bringing light into the clear blue acrylic layer, reflecting light and sparkling, and at certain angles they softly glow and intensify the color of the painting behind them. There are also larger flat glass rounds and acrylic octahedral pieces as well as larger glass spheres in the crashing waves. When layeres and twined with extruded ribbons these create dimension and manipulate light, while creating some of the complexity of a rocky shore.
Acrylic gel medium was tinted and mixed with fine grain calcined sand to create the wet sand under the waves. Coarser sand in medium was layered over sand colored paint with impasto texture to create the sandy shore. A bit of small flake pearl colored mica was brushed over the sandy shore to create subtle directional sparkling effects. Gravel was used to create texture and make the shore seem more like a rocky beach. Small shards of Gilson opal were added to the gravel to provide subtle flashes of color.
