Yellow Counterpoint #1

Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
Acrylic on canvas, 24 × 24 inches. One of a series of 3 (yellow red blue), this was started first but finished last. Yellow painted, poured and extruded concentric circles create a rhythm of line, texture, and form. The relationship between the circles, textures, solids and lines in the painting is reminiscent of musical counterpoint. The visual ideas touch, and then move off in related directions that are only fleetingly parallel.
Each of the primary colors presents a different set of challenges in these pieces. At low saturation blue fades quickly to an inky indigo, almost black. Light blues can look gray or off-white, and blue on blue provides less contrast than the other primaries. Red maintains its identity as a dark color, but “pinks up” as a light color. Yellow is a challenge at both ends. What is a “dark yellow”? Not yellow anymore, but rather gold or brown. A light yellow? At some point it becomes a “cream”.
I used transparent layering, texture, and sandy, metallic, and iridescent yellow-golds to create contrast while maintaining an overall “yellow” identity within the painting.
Inspired by years of studying harmony and counterpoint, years ago. I learned art composition through studies in music theory – the closest discipline available during my undergrad work at MIT.
